easy homemade ice cream
Homemade ice cream is the perfect addition to many desserts, including cakes and pies.

If you are beginning to master your baking & pastry arts you may find that ice cream is usually called for in certain cakes and pies (especially apple pie a la mode!).

What better way to put a simple and classic touch on your desserts than to make old-fashioned homemade ice cream for your favorite treats? Country Living explained how to make this great recipe.

What you need:
4 eggs, whites removed
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (all-natural is best)
pinch of salt
2 cups whole milk
1 cup sugar
2 cups half and half
2 cups whipping cream

What to do:
Grab a medium saucepan and mix the milk, sugar, egg yolks and salt together with a whisk. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high to high heat, then immediately lower to medium. Constantly whisk the mixture until it begins to thicken, about 5 minutes. Grab a large bowl and strain the mixture. Add the rest of the ingredients, give everything a stir, cover with plastic wrap and chill for about 2 hours. Once the mixture has cooled, pour into an ice cream mixer and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
