For many people, there’s nothing that says comfort quite like a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies. As you learn how to cook, perfecting this treat will become one of your new favorite hobbies. However, before you start putting your own spin on it, you’ll need a good foundation to start with. Take a look at this basic cooking recipe for ooey, gooey chocolate chip cookies:

The ingredients
Most chocolate chip cookie recipes use the same basic ingredients, but the quantities will differ. For Allrecipes.com’s recipe for the “Best Chocolate Chip Cookies,” here’s what you’ll need:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup butter (2 sticks), softened
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 teaspoons hot water
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

The steps
First, you’ll need to preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a stand-mixer or using a hand-mixer, cream the butter and sugars until they are smooth. Then, add in eggs one at a time and mix until they are fully incorporated – at this step, you should also use a spatula to scrape down the bowl before you add each new ingredient.

Next, pour the baking soda into the hot water and stir until completely dissolved. Then, add the mixture along with the salt into the batter and mix to incorporate.

For the final step, stir in the flour, chocolate chips and nuts (if applicable) and stir until the mixture forms one even batter. Portion the batter out into mounds on ungreased cookie sheets, and bake in the oven until the edges are nicely browned, which should take about 10 minutes. This recipe will yield about four dozen cookies.

Make your cookies more festive
Depending on the occasion, this recipe can be morphed to match your mood or satisfy your sweet tooth. Instead of one type of chocolate chip, try mixing two or three kinds – like semisweet, dark, milk or white – for a more interesting tasting cookie. If you’re looking for an added crunch, chopped nuts or candy bars can help boost the texture and flavor of your cookie. If your kids are into colors, try swapping out chocolate chips for mini M&Ms or Reese’s pieces. The possibilities are endless!
